After Samajwadi Pension Yojana, Akhilesh Yadav’s ambitious Cycle project may also be scrapped by Yogi Adityanath govt

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has scrapped the Samajwadi Pension Scheme of the previous Samajwadi Party government and ordered a detailed review of its beneficiaries, may now order dismantling of the Cycle tracks constructed in big cities of the state.
According to NDTV, since the formation of BJP government in UP, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s ambitious cycle track project may now come under scanner. Cycle tracks in the state was a project to make regions of the state bicycle-friendly.
The work began with a scheme in Lucknow. The project aimed at giving the city the largest cycle path network in India, covering up to 270 kilometres.
The ex-Chief Minister of UP, Akhilesh Yadav, who had visited Amsterdam in September 2014, had taken special interest in the Cycle project.
He observed that cycling was a common mode of transportation in the Netherlands. After coming back, instructed officials in to plan cycling corridors in order to take a greener approach to transportation.
On 1st March 2015, the first cycle track in Lucknow was inaugurated at Kalidas Marg.
However, cycle tracks have become big obstruction in the traffic movement as those were constructed on roadside.
It is believed that in order to widen the roads for improving traffic scenario, the cycle tracks will be removed. As of now, construction of new tracks have been stopped.
The roads were already narrow and over it these cycle tracks were constructed giving tough time to the commuters daily.
Interestingly, these are rarely used by the cyclists instead it has become hotspot for the street vendors for operating their business.
The officials are preparing a report regarding the usefulness of cycle tracks which will be sent to the chief minister.
These cycle tracks were constructed on both sides of the roads in major cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Ghaziabad, Agra, Aligarh etc by spending crores of from establishment fund and government’s treasury.
CM Yogi Adityanath had recently ordered probe in river front project and withdrawal of Ration Cards with pictures of former CM Akhilesh Yadav. The BJP government has also scrapped the Samajwadi Pension Scheme of the previous SP government.
CM Yogi Adityanath has also directed the officials to conduct an inquiry to find out whether those getting benefits under the scheme were eligible for pension or not and asked them to submit the report within a month.
The CM took the decision during the presentation of various schemes and programmes being run by social welfare department. Yogi directed the officials to verify the beneficiaries of all such schemes and programmes and link them with schemes of the Central government so that they could be implemented effectively.
Interestingly, the CM has asked the officials to present a proposal in the cabinet after reviewing the schemes and programmes to double the monthly amount of the pension given to physically challenged, widows and old age persons.
It may be recalled that last year, the Akhilesh Yadav government had launched the Samajwadi Pension Scheme. The aim was to provide Rs 500 per month to poor women and cover at least 50 lakh beneficiaries in UP.
