Sycophancy at its best: Park in Jalandhar police lines named after Punjab DGP Suresh Arora

Sycophancy has clearly replaced hard core policing in Jalandhar Police Commissionerate where on Monday a renovated park situated in local police lines was named after Punjab director general of police (DGP) Suresh Arora.
The park, which already exists and was beautified with the help of a local industrial house Ambika Overseas, was inaugurated by none other than commissioner of police (CP) Jalandhar and inspector general of police (IGP) rank officer, Arpit Shukla- a blue eyed officer of the DGP.
Sources in the city police have confirmed to Hindustan Times that it was CP’s “personal” idea to name the park as ‘Suresh Arora Park’- an act never witnessed in the history of Punjab Police where the serving DGP has been given such an ‘honour’.
Apart from the DGP’s name on the inauguration stone, a big gate has been put at the entrance of the park with board of DGP’s name.
Sycophancy has remained at the core of Shukla’s tenure as CP in last one year, where the focus of the police has remained on socializing and maintaining public relations and crime has increased in the city and criminals had a free run.
Such has been the scenario of policing in Jalandhar that during high profile murder of RSS leader Brig. Jagdish Gagneja (retd) in August last year, the police rather than following the attackers, choose to stay in the hospital where Gagneja was admitted and where all senior BJP leaders had gathered.
When Gagneja was attacked, even a local BJP MLA had to call the DGP to inform the police about the incident as none of the local officers picked the phone.
“It’s unbelievable to see that a park has been named on serving DGP. Generally, such monuments are dedicated on the name of martyrs. Even political leaders don’t do such acts to please their bosses,” said a retired IG rank officers settled in Jalandhar.
In August last year, Shukla was awarded the President’s Police Medal for taking several initiatives in the department while serving as IG Jalandhar and later, the Jalandhar CP.
Shukla, when contacted, said there is nothing wrong in naming the park on DGP’s name and said there are buildings that has been named on the Generals of Army and former DGPs of Punjab Police.
“The development of police lines was ordered by DGP sir when he visited this place few months back. He has been our inspiration and guidance in developing this site. It was a wish of the other officers and the families living in the Police lines to pay special thanks to the DGP by naming this park on his name,” said Shukla.
